Good hair

A family member and several friends don't like my foray into short hair. Someone told me recently that when my hair was about 1/3rd of an inch long I looked like a (excuse me) "bull dyke." This gave me pause, because unfortunately I still care what people think, but I tell you this--being close to bald was very freeing and I plan to do it again at some point.

I'm including a link to a very good blog where the author describes just what it's like to get one's hair relaxed. It's distressing to me to see so many women of color who still torture their hair into straightness or weave it up, both of which are damaging to the hair and scalp and hell on the wallet.  And to suggest that natural Black hair is "unprofessional" is ludicrous but I bet if one worked in an area in the middle of the country or in a corporate setting, it might still come up.

On the other hand, I ride the bus with a sister who has the only modified curly mohawk and her girlfriend, a dark ebony goddess, is gorgeously bald.  We share stories of our former straightness, of the myth of "good" and "bad" hair, of the joy of ease, of acceptance.

And it's wonderful not to worry about the rain...
